There is nothing new in the saying, “Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations.” Wake up! college is about to get over. It’s time to switch on your power button and get started! It is time to get out of your comfort zone and grow most as a person. The thought of the first job can be scary as well as exciting (we all have felt this!). I remember feeling lost in my first few experiences after college. The work environment is different in every organization but we all face the same set of challenges at our first job. To make your first few days exciting and powerful here are 5 tips that I wish someone gave me when I started my first job/internship:
Don’t ‘fake it till you make it’
It is absolutely fine to say ‘I don’t know’ if you are unaware of certain things. Being the ‘know it all’ won’t take you very far. Ask questions. Ask for help. No one expects you to know everything at your first job or internship. Learning and growing are the keys if you want to succeed. Truthful and honest workers are preferred everywhere.
Being talented can get you only so far
Talent and hard work go hand in hand. One can never be successful without putting effort. It’s your first job! Show that passion and desire to work. Be proactive, ask for work if you do not have enough to do. Diligence earns respect from your colleagues and hard work helps you to master the skills and abilities in the long run. Punctuality is another important aspect which you should never ignore. Show up on time every day (maybe a bit early for some days). Remember you are new and all the eyes are on you. So, never give a reason to anyone to question you. It is advisable not to follow the 9 to 6 routine. Show up a bit early and stay a bit longer.
Do not be a loner
Your office is full of people who are intelligent, knowledgeable, experienced and thoughtful. Talk to them. Get to know them. Gather as much information as you can. Talk and network. Remember, you are new, you can learn something from everyone in your office, be it your junior or senior. Utilize this opportunity and enjoy the process.
Respect personal space
Just because someone sits next to you and gets along well with you, doesn’t mean you will spill out every single detail of your personal life. You had a terrible break-up, fought with your mother or your sister is going out for a vacation? Save all these for your BFFs. The office is not a place to discuss these. Leave your personal life at home. Talk, but not unnecessarily.
Avoid job hopping too soon
Before starting your job/internship, realize that not every day is going to good, and not everyone is going to be nice. You will learn a lot about perseverance and stability. No one likes to hire job hoppers. It gives off the impression that you are confused, unreliable and not ready for challenges.
Following these simple suggestions will make your new life in office balanced and peaceful. Enjoy, learn and grow. This time is not coming again so make the most of it!
