Two days to lights, crackers and joy! Diwali is here! Oh wait, the crackers have been banned… and friendly get-togethers are dependant on heavy traffic on the roads and apart from those who had planned/are planning on road trips/vacations over the long, extending Diwali break, the rest may be wondering about the things they can do over this period.

If this is you, don’t worry – we have some ideas over things you can do over this long Diwali break. And no, we aren’t talking about quality family time, contemplation and using the spirit of the festival to indulge in good samaritan pursuits – though both are good ideas in a good stead.

Here are some quirky to-do’s you can take up during the Diwali break, which will have a direct bearing on your chances for internships, especially the upcoming winter internships and even a career down the line!

5 Intern-wise Things to Do Over The Diwali Break:

1. Draw a Career Graph:

Seriously – whether you’re approaching your second semester, fourth or sixth after the mid-semester exams, right now is the right time for personal colouring exercise – much like the colour outline you made/helped in or took pictures of, outside your door.

Begin with the course you’re doing and end with the things you would be interested in pursuing professionally. Then join the dots between them, picking ideas on options where you could combine the two and earn a good living off it and (if possible) do some good for others. (Ideas we heard at a session conducted by author Sonya Dutta Chaudhary at the recent NEC Pune event).

2. Pick your platter well:

Hogging on sweets over the festive season is a guilty delight many of us engage in. However, before you finish your plate – think about what you’re putting on your platter – at the Diwali feast, in career and in life.

Choose how you intend to smartly spend the next 20 months at college – apart from classes, fun time, activities, societies and more. Decide beforehand on add-on courses, skill certifications, internships to build work experience and an impressive fresher resume. And then go to town with it during placements and job search.

3. Eye opportunities, look for deals:

Dabbling on your mobile and online for good deals this Diwali? Look around for good online courses, MOOCs and certificates. And dig for internships that you can apply and work on during the winter break.

Why a winter internship and not wait for one over the long summer break? Even if you’re only doing internships to add certificates or to achieve course requirements, scoring a winter internship helps you with two certificates than just a single one.

4. Talk: Seniors, Career portals and Quora

For those of you who have been able to chart out a career trajectory (or even a brief set of options for themselves), taking out time to call seniors, placement officers and even contacts over the Diwali break is a good idea.

You can clear doubts, using them as a sounding boards and gain from their persepective on specific areas that you can channel your energies too.

5. Start Applying

And then, apply, apply, apply. Many companies have already put  up postings for their winter internship programs. And even if you would rather apply directly, it makes sense to do so months in advance, so that you can benefit over others, who would apply at the eleventh hour.

So, that’s how you can make the most of your Diwali break – we hope you find something relevant to your needs in our list. Happy Diwali everyone!

Happy Diwali everyone!
