A small company, or a startup is often troubled by the very basic need – getting the right talent in, to build an innovative, great company! And that becomes the premise for this basic recruiting advice from Eric Bosco, Chief BDO from Mitacs Canada. In an exclusive writeup to The Globe and Mail, Bosco counted why internships in startups was the right way forward.

He said, “What I’ve learned is that for a growing startup, it’s far more effective to advertise projects or research opportunities than jobs. Why? Because innovation is what attracts up-and-coming talent to high-tech jobs.”

He was speaking in the context of linking of hiring good quality talent and how, he had earlier, ended up attracting foreign talent eager to work in his Canadian enterprise. Getting the right talent to work for you, especially at this stage can only happen if you present yourself as an innovation and challenge – something that happens when you put up internships in startups.

Internships in Startups: Benefits to students

And what do students, on the other side of the table, stand to gain from an association with startups? What pursuades them to opt for these internships, rather than opt for bigger brands and better corporate structures?

To answer this question, we first begin by looking at what students want. Students, in our experience, are looking for the following from any good internship:

  1. Learning Opportunities
  2. Challenging tasks
  3. Work Experience
  4. Internship Certificate
  5. Resume additions

Offering the toughest problems that a business may face to student minds can provide all five to them. And that, in essence, is the biggest benefit students have, when they opt for internships in startups.

A flat reporting structure, greater say in the business, better opportunities to contribute to the business and relative independence and ease at work are also contributing factors which drive students to such organisations.
