If you have watched the Mentalist (yes, that sexy T.V series) then you would remember the cute yet irritating hero of the story, Patrick Jane. With his goofy smile and blue teacups, Patrick Jane made his way into the hearts of millions including our tough cop, Lisbon. While we all agree to his charms, there can be no doubts that Jane was (most of the times, at least) a complete idiot who would not have survived a day in a summer internship.
So, here are a few tips from the book of Patrick Jane himself, and what not to do in a summer internship.
Tone down that showing-off
Yes, we get it you are great at your work and love showing-off. You won’t be making any friends by being a complete show-off and you won’t want that, especially if you are looking to turn this summer internship opportunity into a job engagement one.
Don’t try to put others down
There is nothing more unattractive than a person trying to put others down. Patrick Jane did that and might have looked cool (at times) doing that. However, he learned and he grew up and he got his happily ever after once he realised that was not the right path to take.
Know where to speak and what to speak
You cannot go on National Television and insult Red John, that is completely out of bounds. Don’t let your mouth run away with your good sense. Know where to speak and always keep in mind the person you are talking to. You need to maintain a certain decorum when talking to your boss. Use tact and care to talk to people around you to be successful in an internship.
Don’t take on things you might not be able to handle
Whether it be an assignment or something on a personal level, don’t commit yourself to things when you are not sure of following through. Don’t be Patrick Jane and loose out on a good part of your life, sleep, and family just because you took on something much bigger than you could handle.
Of course, Patrick Jane found Red John in the end, and you will be able to achieve any task you set your mind on, but is it really worth it? Take on things which you know you can manage or you will end up troubling yourself and your whole team.
You should never stop learning
You are not perfect, you do not know everything, every day is a new opportunity to better yourself and learn something new. The tiger won’t burn “bright” in the night if you stop learning. There is no shame in admitting you don’t know certain things and asking your friends, boss or colleague for help and advice. No one expects you to know everything, so why put up the facade?
Now that I have broken down your favorite show for you, know how to use these points to your advantage to make the best of every internship you be a part of.
