And for those of us who choose it, there are many battles to fight – rural development, poverty alleviation, primary education, nature conservation, human rights and more. CRY – Child Rights and You

Focus on – Child Rights

Child Rights and You, an Indian NGO which works for the rights for underprivileged children, since 1970. They have projects that deal with providing free primary education, primary healthcare, nutrition and safe houses away from violence and abuse.

They do this by partnering with other grassroots NGOs and communities. Interns with CRY will be a part of their volunteer program and understand firsthand the issues that CRY deals with. Interns work on advocacy, create reports of projects as well as help execute events.

Location – Pan-India

Duration – At least 1 month (not restricted to summer internships)

Who can apply –Students or recent college graduates (minimum 18+ years), who can put in a full-time, intensive commitment. Believing in their values – Human Dignity, Transparency, Innovation, Accountability, Secularism, Non-violence is important too.

Teach For India

Focus on – Primary School Education

A non-profit organisation, Teach For India works on removing educational inequality and is a part of the global Teach For All network. The movement works on two levels: Placing TFI Fellows at local government schools for a period of two years to create impact and; creating a community of these fellow alumni who are now TFI advocates. Interns will work in several departments towards achieving these goals.

Location – Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai

Duration – At least 2 months

Focus on – Legal Empowerment

MARG is an NGO that believes legal empowerment will equip people in demanding their rights and ensure delivery of justice. It achieves this through legal awareness, legal assistance, building legal capacity for good governance and policy development.

Location – New Delhi

Duration – At least 1 month

Focus on – Digital Empowerment

DEF is the world’s leading NGOs in the field of Information & Communication Technology for Development. Duration – They have three variations – RapShip (Rapid Internship for a month), SurfShip (Surface Internship for a period of three months involving travel and research), DeepShip (Deep Internship for a period of 6 months to 1 year involving execution of end to end projects)

Focus on – Addressing basic needs (Clothing)

Goonj focuses on essential needs, specifically clothing. It has created a bridge between urban and rural by repurposing discarded clothing and giving it to the needy. It uses clothing in exchange for creating rural infrastructure and encourages a culture of giving in urban areas. It works towards disaster relief, women’s hygiene issues and rural income generation.

Location – Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jammu

Duration – At least 1 month

Focus on – Family-based care for orphaned or abandoned children

SOS Children’s Villages is one of the best NGOs in India and has been doing great work for underprivileged children for the past 50 years. They offer family based in communities for parentless children. It creates a safe community or village for the child to grow up in and have a sense of belonging. Focus on – Wildlife and Environmental issues

Conservation-based WWF India holds their focus towards wildlife and environmental issues with different initiatives. These are based on education (awareness), policy making and community initiatives, like the CEL (Centre for Environment Law). In fact, CEL is one initiative which provides internships to students. It is a resource centre which teaches environmental law and research in national, regional and international context.

Location – New Delhi

Duration – 45 to 60 days

They provide services in various areas like Healthcare, Education, livelihood and Community Development. Focus on – Legal Empowerment

HRLN is committed towards changing the legal system in India and providing legal access and justice to all. It is a network of lawyers, paralegals and social activists who work across India and provide pro bono legal services to those who cannot afford nor have access to legal advice. They work towards legal education, awareness, as well as sensitize judiciary and investigate violations. Interns will work in their offices in research and several of these initiatives.

Location – New Delhi & Mumbai

Duration – At least 6 weeks for national applicants and 12 weeks for international applicants

Focus on – Primary Education

Aid India is an NGO which was started by a group of IIT and BITS alumni, who set out to create a change in the education system in India. The NGO works at the grassroots level towards education of children and other several developmental initiatives. Their flagship program is called EurekaChild and they work with thousands of government schools, NGOs and village centres in Tamil Nadu. Interns will work in several of these programs and experience change first hand.
