Have you watched popular web-series or TV shows where there is always the ‘average guy’ stereotype that is happy with his mediocre achievements? Or the memes and comics which have characters that are lazy, procrastinators and just generally satisfied with the most basic things in life like pizza and Netflix? Have you felt that they touch a chord in your college life and that this is it, you are going to ‘fail at adulting’ and just be average forever?
Just STOP right there! That’s not your life and you don’t have to
be average just yet!
To be young and privileged –
If you have someone paying for your college and you are less than 25 years, congratulations you are privileged and lucky to be in the prime of your life! If you have to achieve something, it is now. Many youngsters have to pay their own way through college and do part-time jobs; they are already focused and understand the value of time and money.
However, if you have the right support financially and are from a stable home then that’s half the battle won. These college years give you the freedom to make mistakes and learn, make the best use of them to achieve career success.
Take care of your mental health –
The media has started talking a lot about mental health but still, almost 65% of youngsters in India suffer from mental health issues. While you may not suffer from serious depression, issues at college and home might make you feel low on self-esteem and hamper your development.
Do not suffer alone, take help from your friends, parents, lecturers at college or any other trusted adults. Take help at the right time so that it does not stop you from achieving your dreams.
Beat the social media algorithms –
Social Media platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Instagram have intelligent algorithms that capture what you like and show you more of the same. It works for them and keeps you hooked but once you are in the cycle of watching and consuming content that lets you make excuses for your enthusiasm, there is no getting away!
You see more memes that prompt you to tag your friends and brag about who is lazier of the two. Never in the history of mankind have humans found it acceptable to revel in low productivity and mediocrity like now.
Just cut the cycle, consume more interesting, knowledgeable and motivating content. Push and motivate your friends to do the same and you will find yourself closer to success.
Life can be as fulfilling as you want it to –
You might be surrounded by adults who are constantly in a cycle of earning salary, making EMI payments and complaining about their work.
It is definitely a part of the current lifestyle and not entirely unavoidable for most. However, you can avoid this cycle and enjoy a fulfilling career and life. Even now there are people who enjoy their work and have hobbies or passion projects that keep them engaged and happy.
You cannot assume that your life is set after graduation, there is no set life plan of ‘get an IT job, get married, have kids and keep working and complaining till you retire’! The world is changing, embrace the change and prepare yourself. Become a global citizen who is equipped with employable skills who can chart professional success. It’s too soon to give up and be happy in your ‘average life’!
