Reliance Jio is leaving no stone unturned to capture the telecom market. After announcing free Jio phones, Reliance is set to entertain college students with free Wi-Fi. The proposal which is still in pipeline will benefit 3 crore students if and when it comes in place.
Doling out free Wi-Fi
Reliance Jio recently submitted a proposal to the HRD Ministry stating its intention of providing free Wi-Fi to college students.
Reliance Jio desires to connect with 38,000 colleges which fall under the HRD Ministry and provide them with free Wi-Fi.
The idea is one of its kind for any telecom company and the Ministry is still considering it. However, the only concern the HRD Ministry has is that other network providers should also get a fair chance. Though Reliance Jio is not charging any money from the Ministry, yet they want the whole process to be transparent and take into account the impact it will have on other network providers.
“A tender will be floated so that it is a fair and transparent process,” said a source.
The government wants to give other network providers a chance before it takes any final decision.
Though Reliance Jio might be the first network provider, the idea is not altogether new. The government of India along with the HRD Ministry is planning to implement such a move itself.
The move will provide Wi-Fi connectivity to central universities. The idea has been in the pipeline for some time now and will most likely take off by the end of next month. So far 38 universities are being considered to be a part of the free Wi-Fi scheme.
While a good Wi-Fi connection is a great opportunity to download movies and catch the latest episodes of Game of Thrones, the idea behind the launch is to boost the usage of online educational material. Not only educational material, virtual internships will also become much more fun with a good, smooth network.
