Weekly Spotlight | 5 Indian Start-ups you should know about.


1. Paintcollar:
On paintcollar.com, artists and designers can create merchandise with their art on it, set their own profit margins and sell it online. When a customer buys the product, the company manufactures it and delivers across India while the artist gets paid the profit margin he had set. The startup has started off with four products – poster prints, canvas prints, laptop skins and T-shirts and are working on adding new products like mobile cases very soon.

Paintcollar was officially launched on 12th September 2014 at Bangalore Comic Con. It sold merchandise designed by some of their early adopter artists and received an amazing response.

The founding team consists of five engineers who graduated in 2013. Three of us are from NIT Trichy while two are from VNIT Nagpur. The rest of the Paintcollar team consists of a creative head, a front end engineer and software engineering interns. The company is based in Mumbai.

2. Namakh:
Namakh, a Contemporary Fast Fashion Women’s Brand targeted at the Woman who is a “Compulsive Repeat Online Shopper” was founded by Anirban Chakraborty, a professional designer and Debasis Chakraborty, a NIFT Delhi and in November, 2014.

When you think of the women fashion industry, all you see is glossy tailored clothing and high retail markups, however Namakh promises apparel that is affordable trendy at the same time.

“Our prices are sharp, starting as low as Rs.299/ and have bulk of our products below Rs. 599 with a few above this price point. Our styles are simple yet fashionable regular wear,” says Anirban. While Debasis is a serial entrepreneur who started his first venture in the Corporate Gifting niche and then co-founded Unamia.com (kids online store), Anirban has been instrumental in building Ethnic Brands for Lifestyle, Reliance Trends, Inmark Retail. His last assignment was with Collectibilia.

3. iTiffin:

Whether you are a student or a busy professional, now healthy and calorie defined food will be at your door step with just a click, call or SMS. This is the promise made by iTiffin: the Intelligent Tiffin, a Bangalore based food startup. Founded by Tapan Kumar Das and Ryan Fernando,  iTiffin has the capacity to produce 5000 meals per day. The company owns 20 vehicles and 25 person team to manage the end to end supply efficiently.

After extensive research and R&D works, the startup has come up with the perfect healthy meal. An average tray of iTiffin contains brown rice, three chapattis, lentil curry, one vegetable and a delicious salad. Delivered five days a week it sums up to Rs. 1,750 per month for 500 Kcal and Rs. 1,850 per month for 600 Kcal meals.

iTiffin have plans to lunch specific food trays for diabetic patients, heart patients, old age people and tie up with school to provide healthy notorious lunch to school children for their overall growth.
