Schindler’s List, Jaws, E.T…Spielberg! (cinespaco)

MS Word won’t even dare correct you if you type Spielberg. That’s the level of fame, success and impression this filmmaker has on the Celluloid World. He has worked on more than 180 fabulous films including ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, from where our poor Indian Jaadu, who craved dhoop was “conceptualised” (Bollywood!). This directorial luminary has broken his own movie records, won three Oscars and has an exceptionally celebrated success.

And yes, it all started with an Internship in Universal Studios!

Spielberg was a college drop-out. When he was a Boy Scout, he asked the Scoutmaster if he could tell a story with his father’s movie camera. The Scoutmaster agreed and that was how it all started. While he was pursuing his studies at California State University, Long Beach, he was offered a small unpaid internship at Universal Studios with the Editing department. The only issue was this “unofficial’ internship won’t let him have access to the studios. Spielberg didn’t mend his ways. He kept showing on the sets every day. This dedicated effort drafted his career.

He was given the opportunity to make a short film for theatrical release, the 26-minute, 35mm, Amblin’, which he wrote and directed. Studio vice president Sidney Sheinberg was impressed by the film, which had won a number of awards, and offered Spielberg a seven-year directing contract. It made him the youngest director ever to be signed for a long-term deal with a major Hollywood studio. He subsequently dropped out of college to begin professionally directing TV productions with Universal.

Despite his withdrawal from college, he began professionally directing TV productions with Universal. But Spielberg later returned to California State University, Long Beach and completed his BA degree in Film and Electronic Arts in 2002.

If not a movie director, he’d have been a Video Game Designer! Steven Spielberg is a phenomenon, an era and what we can learn from him is to be relentless in pursuing whatever is your calling. Some people may have more than one call! Even Kanye West interned at Fendi!
