The proposed Gender Education Research Fellowship Programme will provide an opportunity to young education enthusiasts who want to make primary education more inclusive and sensitive towards female students. The research fellowship aims to facilitate innovative pedagogy and conduct a policy research over the period of one year primarily focusing on gender inclusion. Fellows during the fellowship will have to play a dual role, first as a learning facilitator and second as a policy researcher based on a yearlong field action research. The primary stakeholders will be parents, children, schools, policy researchers and edupreneurs. The fellowship aims to fulfil the following aspects:

1. Promote and practice gender friendly academic environment, infrastructures, curriculum and equal gender representation

2. Provide an inclusive learning approach keeping students, parents and school in mind

3. Bring participation from new generation Edupreneurs who can tackle problems faced by the present primary education system

4. Produce gender centred primary education policy that can solve the existing problems

In particular, this fellowships aims at providing a path-breaking educational outreach to the children of tribal communities in West Bengal. Breaking the barriers of society, caste, creed and socioeconomic background, this fellowships aims at bringing a gender inclusive education to tribal children with holistic learning.


The fellowship will be 12 months in length. It will begin from the end of August 2018 and will end in July 2019. Fellows will be working full time with MANT Kolkata in coordination with Idiog Consultancy.

Location: Purulia District (West Bengal)

Who are you going to work with?

You will be closely working in schools of Purulia District - West Bengal. It is predominantly inhabited by tribal people.

Basic requirements to apply:

1. Bachelors (min 3 years) in any discipline with minimum 1-year experience in the development sector and if post graduate then he/she should preferably be from the primary education sector

2. We only encourage students to apply for this fellowship who can speak fluent Bengali (compulsory)

3. Should have some appreciable knowledge about current education sector and understanding of gender discourse at family, society and primary education level

4. Good communication, writing and presentation skills

Stipend: INR 15,000 per month with accommodation and food

Selection Process:

Telephonic Interview: July 20, 2018 - July 25, 2018

Skype Interview: July 25 - July 30, 2018

In Person Interview: First week of August 2018

Final call to the successfully selected candidates: Second week of August 2018

Training of fellows: Third week of August 2018

Fellowship begins: Last week of August 2018

Roles and Responsibilities:

What unique opportunity does it provide to the Fellows?
They will engage in two core initiatives, as a learning facilitator, and as a policy researcher.

1. Thematic focused group discussions on respective issues

2. Conducting monthly interactive sessions with Students and Parents

3. Formulating a gender inclusive school plan on the maximum participation of stakeholders

4. Rapport Building with all identified stakeholders for a formal introduction, seeking their support and feedbacks

5. Weekly meeting with stakeholders, creating the best possible channel for communicating with respective partners

Gender Policy Researcher –
1. Policy thesis writing

2. Midterm presentation and review of the findings

3. Draft proposals will be shared among research mentors for review and adoption of fellows

4. Preparing proposal after an in-depth discussion with partners in the field and literature review


Stipend: INR 15,000 per month with accommodation and food
